Tips for a Smooth Summer Road Trip with Kids

Posted by Sara Chinnock on

Summertime, and the open road is calling! There’s something truly magical about packing up the car, curating the perfect playlist, and setting off on an adventure. But let’s be real, while the destination is always exciting, the journey itself can sometimes be a bit… much. I have friends who are moms with little kids, and I’ve heard all the stories – the incessant "Are we there yet?" choruses, the squabbles in the backseat, the desperate pleas for Wi-Fi. Trust me, I get it.

That’s why I'm here to share some of my favorite tips for making your summer road trips less about surviving and more about thriving. Because a smooth journey really does make for a sweeter destination.

Tip #1: Pack Smart Snacks to Keep Everyone Happy

First things first: snacks are non-negotiable. And I don’t just mean a bag of chips. Think smart, think minimal mess. Pre-portioned fruit, cheese sticks, granola bars – anything that won’t leave a sticky residue all over your car. Hydration is key, too, so reusable water bottles are a must. Bonus points if they’re insulated to keep drinks cool for longer.

Tip #2: Engage Young Minds with Screen-Free Fun

Next up, entertainment. This is where most people hit a wall, especially with kids. While screens have their place, it's incredible what a little screen-free fun can do for everyone's sanity. This is where I absolutely have to tell you about The Travel Box from Sara's Boxes & Boards. Seriously, it's a game-changer because I designed it specifically with those long journeys in mind! Imagine pulling out a box that's filled with everything you need to keep those little minds engaged for hours. We’re talking coloring books, word searches, hidden pictures – all the classics that keep kids engrossed.

What I love most about The Travel Box is how thoughtfully it’s put together, because I curated every single item. My personal favorite is the Travel Bingo. We played this on one of our trips, and it was hilarious watching everyone eagerly spot things. Additionally, items like the acrylic Tic Tac Toe and Hangman are brilliant for quick, engaging games that don't require much space. It’s not just a collection of random items; it’s a carefully curated experience designed to encourage observation, creativity, and good old-fashioned fun, which is precisely what you want when you’re confined to a car for hours.

Tip #3: Stay Ready with Road Trip Essentials

Beyond the entertainment, don’t forget the practicalities. Pack a small first-aid kit, just in case. A blanket or two can be great for impromptu naps or for keeping cozy if the AC gets a bit too enthusiastic. And always, always have a trash bag readily accessible. Because crumbs and wrappers have a magical way of multiplying in a confined space.

Tip #4: Embrace Detours and Discover Hidden Gems

Sometimes the most memorable parts of a road trip aren't the planned stops, but the unexpected ones. That quirky roadside attraction, the charming small-town bakery, or the breathtaking view that wasn't on your map. Those are the moments that truly make a road trip special.
